Have you always battled Algae in your pool? Do you want to make sure that you have an Algae free pool this summer?
Well, Phosphates could be the main culprit as to why your pool keeps turning green. Phosphates are the food source for Algae and acts like a fertilizer to help it grow. When you eliminate the food source for something it weakens it and prevents it from growing, therefore No Phosphates…No Algae!

Knowing how many gallons of water is in your hot tub is an important step in balancing your water chemistry. This helpful set of steps from ehow.com is a great way to help determine how many gallons your hot tub is with a simple hose and bucket test.
1. Measure the flow rate of a garden hose in gallons per minute. Do this by letting the water flow into a bucket for 10 seconds and multiplying the number of gallons by 6. For example, if you filled a bucket with 1/2 gallon in 10 seconds, then the flow rate of the garden hose is 3 gallons per minute. (0.5)(6) = 3 gpm.
2. Fill the spa with the garden hose and start a timer as soon as the water starts flowing.
3. Stop the timer when the spa is completely filled.
4. Multiply the number of minutes that have passed by the gallons per minute. This is the number of gallons that the spa can hold. For example, if it takes 200 minutes to fill the spa and the hose flows at a rate of 3 gallons per minute, then the capacity of the spa is 600 gallons. (200)(3) = 600 gallons.
5. Use this method for a spa with a complex shape, an uneven floor or sides that slope at an angle.

How to add chemicals to your hot tub
This has come up several times this week so a quick reminder on what to do when adding chemicals to your hot tub. Make sure to leave the cover completely open for 20-30 minutes after adding chemicals and run your jets and bubbles. It is important to do this so you don't breathe them in when you go to enjoy a relaxing soak.

Stain and Scale Control is a weekly maintenance product that many hot tub owners neglect to use. Over time, a light film or “scale” can build up in the plumbing lines and the moving parts within the spa – like the jets. Stain and Scale Control will not only prevent this from happening, but it will also remove some of the scale already present. Protect your hot tub and it will be your best friend for years!

Are you keeping your hot tub water balanced?
Did you know that most chemical manufactures base their weekly chemical recommendations off a formula of 1-2 people who are in the hot tub for 15-30 minutes about 2 times per week. During the holidays, with friends and family coming over it is important to make sure you are keeping up with your sanitation chemicals and testing your hot tub at least, once per week. With temps starting to hit below freezing it is a good time to remind everyone what to do if we start to see temperatures remain below freezing during the day and remaining into the night. Make sure you have your hot tub filled and running. Warm, running water takes a lot more than a few freezing days to freeze. If you have a pool, make sure your pump and equipment is on and running 24/7 until temperatures are above freezing. There is no need to heat your pool but make sure water is running through all your pipes. Happy Winter!

What can I do about cloudy water?
Last week we had a great question on what to do when your water is cloudy. Cloudy water can be caused from many factors but the most common factors are dirty filters or your pool/spa water needed to be shocked. It is also important to test your water at least once a week at home and don't forget…we offer free water analysis in stores for all our customers.
